As the Action Learning coach, I will do these interventions by asking the team the following questions:

    1. Are we in agreement with what our implemented actions plans will be? Yes or No.
(I would assume that most of the responses, if not all, will be a “No”.)
    2. What impact would this lead us to if the team continues to choose in stopping short of actually developing a fully and clearly implemented action plan?
    3. How will the team prevent this situation from reoccuring?
    4. How does the team want to proceed inorder for then to reach a level of agreement?

    Who has the next question?

    1. What solutions have you come up with so far?
    2. How will it impact the organization if a fully and clearly implementable plan is not developed and set into motion?

if it is a multiple problem action learning, as a coach firstly I will ask the group how close are we to solving the problem. And I continue to ask the problem presenter what actions will she or he takes, then I will remind them about the time left and ask the group what is the impact of doing such kind of brainstorming.
If it is a single problem, firstly I will ask the team how close are we to solving the problem, do we have an agreement? Then, I will continue how will the quality of solutions be impacted by doing the brainstorming process, and remind them about the time.

I would ask the team what would be the impact to the organization if the team does not complete the plan.
I would also ask the impact of the contribution from the team members to reach this stage

As the AL Coach, I will do remind the team that the purpose of the AL session is getting the solutions through asking questions and do learning intervention when opportunity appeared. The reminder will be by asking question, i.e. Team, how are you doing so far? Are we at the good stage on the AL Session? I can ask the team member whether she / he recall the steps in doing AL Session? I also will ask the member member regarding the pause that we are doing, whether we are ok with this situation and keep reminding them about the action learning principals. If all the members agree with the decision to pause, then I need to honour the decision and will inform them that we stop the AL session and will continue with the action planning session (although this will be the last option to do, cause if I push and insist to do the AL session while the rest want to do action planning session, then no point of doing AL session in this situation).

    Regards,
    Anna

I assume that this is a group problem. I also assume that they’ve agreement on the problem and are now working on solutions.
If great solutions are popping up maybe this is good, but time sure runs.
I would ask after the ‘doing well’ and ‘could we do better’ questions: “Are we keeping focused? What’s the impact of loosing focus?” and then I would warn them that in X minutes I will asked them: “Is everyone clear as to what actions each of you will be taking between now and the next session?”.

This is where I would do a time check and say, “We have x minutes remaining in our session. How are we doing with driving towards some actionable items that will help X problem presenter with his/her problem?” I would follow that with, “What does the group need to continue?” and “Who has the next question?”

Wow – some really great responses!

Since we are into identifying potential solutions (brainstorming) we can safely assume they had reached consensus on the problem and are working towards a solution.

I’d do a time check with a reminder that in xx minutes I will ask them what actions they are going to take towards implementing the solution.

    Happy Coaching
