Scenario: Overly Focused

As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation: The team is involved in generating a number of alternative perceptions, ideas, opinions, facts, etc. The team focuses on only one (e.g., debating their merits or validity) and omits other items from explicit consideration.

I would lean in the group en ask the following question: I’ve obeserved that the focus from the group is only on one idea. Has anyone else observed this?

I might ask, “How are we doing at making sure everyone’s ideas are considered?”

i would say that i observe that the group is only focusing one item, has anyone else noticed this?
then as the group what is the impact on the group and the output of the group as a result, followed by myself asking the group to agree on and set a norm of focusing on all the relevant factors as we proceed with our session.

After asking the standard 3 questions (How are we doing as a team on a scale of 1 – 10? What are we doing well? What can we do better?)

How are we doing exploring all the alternatives we surfaced?
Why is it important the we evaluate all alternatives?
How can we make sure we evaluate all alternatives?

    Happy Coaching
