Scenario: Presenter Question

As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation: All of the questions are directed at the problem presenter. After asking the standard 3 questions no one has mentioned this.

I would ask something along the lines of “Has anyone noticed who is receiving all of our questions thus far?” Based on the group’s response . . . which I think would be apparent . . . we could explore the benefit of opening up the questioning to others. How might we engage others in the process of responding to questions? What value is there to be gained by doing so? And to the Problem Presenter . . . What does it feel like being asked all of the questions? Are there some questions you might like to ask of the group?

As the Action Learning Coach, I would intervene and address them accordingly, framing the question in a different way, such as:

By asking questions of each other, how can we discover the other knowledge members of the working group have? Why is it important that we tap into the diverse knowledge available to us here?

I would ask – What’s the balance of who is asking and who is answering questions?
Why is it important that we tap all the knowledge we have here?
How can we tap into each others knowledge?

Team, how are we doing so far?
What’s the team interaction level on a scale of 1-10?
What can we do to improve that?
