Scenario: Solution Statements

As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:

When members of the team read their problem statement, what they read is clearly a solution. For instance – “Joe needs to hire me to do a team building activity with his team”.

As their AL coach, I will ask the team:

    – What is the difference between a “problem statement” and a “solution”?
    – Based on what you have read, are you identifying the problem?
    – Write down the problem statement

I agree with Alvin. I would ask the team to identify the difference between a ‘problem statement’ and a ‘solution.’ I would also ask what the impact is on the team and the process if solutions are offered in problem statements. I would then ask the participant if he could rephrase his problem statement.

I think Alvin gave a good suggestion, firstly, I would like to choose let the team member to write down their problems, and then let them read it out. After each one in the group read out their problems, I would ask them to identify the difference between each problem presenting “Is there any difference of our presented problems?” “What’s that?” “What’s the probable impacts of this difference in our next group working?”
Through the questions we can support team to think about it and find their solutions.

I’ll ask him: what is your problem?Or asked: if translate you a statement of the problem, what’s the problem?

Frequently, the first time I have a team write the problem. I’ll ask them to read what they’ve written to themselves and decide if they’ve written a problem or a solution. And if what they’ve written a solution – write what problem that would solve.

If as in this scenario, it gets read. I would ask the person – is that a problem or a solution? If they say solution – I would ask – What problem would that solve?

I would also ask – How is this a problem? or What problem will this solve? – to help the team member focus on problem statement while keeping the vibes positive.
