So this is an interesting one. As “all other rules are up to the team to decide,” I would first wait and observe the effect it is having on the team’s discussion. If the use of electronics is distracting, is slowing down the questions, or is in other ways visibly impeding the team’s ability to focus, I would intervene and say, “I am noticing that the use of electronics which the team decided was o.k. is disrupting the team’s focus on asking powerful questions.” “Who else is noticing this”? and, “What does the team want to do now about this ground rule”? This should help the group become self-aware and discard the disruptive practice.

As an action learning coach, if the team decides to use electronics during a session, I would first acknowledge their decision by saying, “I see the team has agreed to use electronics during our session.” Then, I would discuss the potential impacts by asking, “How might using electronics affect our focus and interaction?” It’s important to explore the reasons behind their choice by inquiring, “What are the reasons for wanting to use electronics during our session?”

Hello team, I would like to ask the team, why did the team decide to use electronics?

What impact does electronics have on the team?

What can we do with electronics to be better?

I would gently intervene by asking questions regarding the group’s level of participation, as well as their focus, perhaps using a scale from 1 to 10. If any members rate the group’s engagement or focus on the lower end, I would invite them to share more about why they gave that rating. From the sessions I have conducted so far I have found that certain members of the group identify that the coach is referring to a particular issue that is disrupting the session and often bring it up explicitly thus ensuring the group is made aware of it as well.
