Scenario: Skill transference

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: When checking in with the team at the beginning of the session about their learnings between sessions, one of the participants says that he has taken to writing a skill up on his white board in his office every day and it’s been amazing for helping him make changes in how he leads.

At step 7 in the script we share how we work on individual leadership competencies. Questions that can be asked are: what is the valuable thing that emerged from a session and what have we learned that we can apply in our organization. Standing still and sharing a learning development can contribute to leadership development.

Nice to see and hear back that AL leads to creative ways to work on leadership goals. Visualizing a learning goal can help you focus on your goals. I would compliment this person and ask how this method has contributed to strengthening the leadership competencies.

I would thank him for sharing and compliment him. I would ask a follow up question e.g. other than leadership competency, any other observations and learnings to take away from the earlier session around the process and interactions among the team in the last session or e.g. what can the team do better in this session.

I would commend on the person and he is willing to share more, invite him to share examples on how his leadership skills have changed.
And from the example, i would connect it to the conclusion on the script on: what have you learned today that you can use in your work or life?

    – Praise and ask: “How did writing a skill on the whiteboard help him specifically change his leadership style?”

I will thank him for sharing and ask
“Could you tell the team on how writing the skill on the white board make changes in how you leads?”
“What are the changes you can notice?”
“What do you learn from this changes?”

it’s been amazing for helping him make changes in how he leads.
