Scenario: Multiple Behaviors

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:

At the end of the session, several participants have practiced many of the leadership skills that were written up.

  1. I would ask the members to speak to the behavior they have chosen in the beginning. If time permits, i would ask them to add any additional observations on other behaviors.

  2. In order to provide an additional learning opportunity if there is time, I could ask group for an example of another person in the group using the same skill and the impact of using that skill.

  3. After going through the usual rounds of feedback on observed leadership skills or behaviours, I would then devote a few minutes on whether the team observed other behaviours being displayed.

If the team did state other observed skills/behaviours, I would ask the team what would be the possible benefits (or consequences) of displaying multiple skills during the sessions, and after getting answers, I would ask how we can use this learning in the succeeding sessions (if any).

  4. I would ask each participant to reflect and provide feedbacks on the leadership skills that they selected at the beginning. And if the time allowed, I will ask the participants to reflect whether they also practice other leadership skills.

  5. As others have stated (if time permits) – I would ask the team what other leadership skills they saw others demonstrating during the session? What was the impact on the problem solving of so many leadership skills being utilized? How can we take what we learned today about consciously developing our leadership skills back to our ‘day’ job?

  6. I think it is a great situations where several participants have practiced several leadership skills. It does not matter that they have to adhere so closely to the one they selected in the first place. What I would pay attention is amongst all that they practiced, which one stands out and carried the most energy for them at that moment. That would be their biggest learning.

So I would ask, “Amongst all these several leadership skills, which one stands out for you?”, “How does it stands out for you?”
