Scenario: Silo-ed Participants

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: Each member of the team is focused on their own line of questioning. This becomes particularly clear when participants start asking questions they have asked multiple times.

In this situation, I would intervene by asking team
    – Hi Team, how you think we are are cooperating as a team?
    then I would continue:
    – Based on what we have observed, what can we improve to work more effectively as a team?

As an ALC I would ask: “I’ve noticed that the same questions have been asked more than once. Can you agree on this?”
      If so:
      – “What impact does this have on our session?”
      If negative:
      – “How can we improve our cooperation as a team?”

1- I have observed that same questions have been asked more than once. How would this impact on our working session?
2 – how can we work better as a team?

As an Action learning coach I would intervene by asking the group: From 0-10 how much are the questions we are asking contributing to the understanding/solution of the problem?
After answers I would ask: What can we do better as a group?
If it is still necessary, I would ask the question later: How can we work better as a group?

As an Action Learning coach I would right at the beginning of the session state that we are trying to solve this as a team and need to own up the scenario/problem statement as a team. As members speak up and I see that the same questions are asked multiple times, I would intervene as a coach and ask the following questions –

    1) How do you think we are doing as a group?
    2) What do you think about the quality of questions being asked?
    3) Are we building on to the questions or are the same questions being reframed?

I would use the (scripted) intervention at 8-10 minutes in to ask:
    – How are we doing as a team?
    – What are we doing well?
    – What could we do better?
    – How are we doing with building on each other’s questions?
    – What is the impact of building on each other’s questions?
    – What does the team want to do about it?
    – Who has the next question?

If the single-line of questioning continues, I would go in with a Level 2 intervention and ask:
      – How are we going with building on each other’s questions?
      – What is the impact of not building on each other’s questions?
      – We agreed that the team would …(what the team agreed to during the previous intervention). So what does the team want to do differently?
      – Who has the next question?

    I will ask the team:
    – Based on the information just provided by pp we have been discussing for some time, I have observed a phenomenon that the same question is always raised over and over again, have you noticed this?
    – Yes – what do you think is the impact of continuing this discussion? What can we do to eliminate this phenomenon?
    – no-continue and intervene when it happens a second time.

I would make the observation to the team that the same question has been asked more than once and ask first “How are we doing as a team so far on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being terrible and 10 fantastic?”, “What are the quality of our questions?”, “Has anyone observed that we are asking the same questions to the PP”?, “What is the impact of the same questions to our session?”, “How can we improve as a team?”

    – YES- What do you think will be the impact of continuing the discussion like this? What can we do to eliminate this phenomenon?
    – NO-Continue and intervene the second time it happens.
