Scenario: Limited Choice (2026)

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:

Someone asks a great open question, then follows it with a couple choices for the response. For example- What is it that bother you most about this situation? Is it A or is it B?

  1. There are a few things to think about here. The first question is an example of a great open question and it would be good to harness the perspective of the group/whoever the question is directed at to answer the question. By adding the second question this stacks two questions so makes it hard for people to know which one to answer. I would intervene and ask which question they want to ask first. Maybe there has been much discussion about two possible options and a closed question to move forward is appropriate – but maybe they are still in the diverge stage so an open question is more appropriate. I would also use it as a learning opportunity – what is the impact on the group when two questions are asked at the same time?
