Scenario: Uninvited Guest
As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:
An animal – bird, monkey, or other – enters the room through an open window.

As coach i would chase the creature out as quickly as possible. I would then ask the question “How are we doing as a group” if nothing special comes up i would continue the session

I would ask the group whether the uninvited guest is causing too much of a distraction and ask them whether they would like to take a break for a few minutes so that the guest can be removed from the room.

Having an animal invade the room during an Action Learning session is a very unusual situation that will definitely disrupt the session. The disruption might be a little difficult to manage as the team’s attention will be drawn to the uninvited guest. A worse situation would be that the animal might be violent.
The best action to take in this situation is to properly manage the disruption by calling for a short break to enable the appropariate authorities take charge of the animal. I will suggest to the team that it might be a good time to take a 5 or 10 minnutes break either for tea or lunch. I will specify the time to reconvene.
That way the disruption is properly managed.

I’d ask the group “how would you like to handle this situation?” and maybe a follow up, “How did this impact the quality of our work today?” What did you learn about yourselves and your reactions when this happened today?”

I would acknowledge the arrival (with a number 1 intervention and a smile of course)and ask the group how they would like to handle the visitor (as it is their session) and I would action accordingly. If they agreed for the visitor to stay I would be mindful it was not a disruptive force and if I observed it being disruptive I would intervene (for a learning purpose) and ask the group how they feel they are going. If not OK, I would ask what we could do better and if it came out to remove the vistor I would ask them how they would like to go about it and proceed to remove the vistor. When the group is re-established I would ask who has the next question.

Obviously, if it is an emergency situation we just take action. Assuming it is not- it is for the team to determine how to handle it. So I would simple ask the team How they want to handle the situation.

As AL Coach is recomended make questions to group, for instance: how they are feeling about it, if this situation is afecting meeting or not? More once, the final decision must be of group and not of AL Coach.

We will probably face two kinds of chaos, disorder and distraction, in the scenario of uninvited guest.
When a monkey enters the room through an open window, the assembly perhaps will immediately go out of control because of the fear of getting infected disease or fear of getting bitten. My first reaction is to eliminate this disorder and then leave a few time of taking deep breaths to the team for their returning to calm. After these disposals, I will require the opinions of the team if the assembly can be continued or not? If any member expresses the difficulty of continuously proceeding the assembly, I will address the question “What can help us to continuously proceed the assembly?” to the team.
When a bird enters the meeting room through an open window, it will probably attracts the team members’ attentions. I should keep eye on the changes of team members’ attentions for a while because of an interruption of the bird.
If any distraction is found in the team, I will call back the team’s attention by processing the requirements of team members’ suggestions against the question “A bird is flying around in our room now. How do we handle the impact of this bird?”
