Scenario: Repeat behavior

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:

The team decides they should be asking each other more questions instead of just asking questions of the problem presenter. However they continue directing all of the problems to the problem presenter.

As an Action Learning coach I will consider how long this action takes time. For example, if the coffee was far from the group or at the other room, I will ask to the group:
    – Mr/Mrs X is not here with us. What is the group decision about this? Shall we wait for him/her?
    – What is the impact when someone goes to have coffee during an Action Learning Session?
    – What kind of agreement do we, as group, have about this subject?
When Mr/Mrs X comes back, I will ask to someone in the group to tell him/her about the impact of their leaving and present the agreement, and request also his/hers accordance.
If the coffee is inside the room, near the group and this participant fills his cup of coffee very quickly, I will invite the group to think about the impact when someone goes to fill his cup, including the participant who did this.

I tell the group that we have an opportunity to learn.
    – What is the impact when we focus only on the problem presenter to answer our questions?
    – What was the agreement we had earlier?
    – Do we keep the agreement or do we need to change that?

    I will ask them:
    – We have made a decision, what will we do now?
    – What will we do to make our team work better?

I will intervene by asking: Have anyone notice there is an learning opportunity related to what we have agreed a moment ago? What have we have been doing well? How can we help our team to do better? If nobody comments on the fact that they are directing most questions to the problem presenter despite they have agreed to ask one another more question, then I would ask them why did that happen? What can we learn from that? How can we help our team doing better

I would tell the team we have agreed to share the questions thru others that the problem presenter, but that is not happening. Then i would ask what we would we do when the situation happens again?

I would intervene with “How are we doing with asking questions to each other?”

There will be a few responses & it will be noted that they are still asking questions only to the problem presenter.

I will follow this up with “What is the impact of making team decisions & not following the same?”

I am noticing that we are still focused on asking questions of the problem presenter? Does anyone else notice this? What is the impact? How do we want to proceed?

Great responses. As there are a multitude of ways to address this. My favorite –

You all had indicated you wanted to start asking more questions of each other. How are we doing with that?

    Happy Coaching
