Scenario: Process Question
As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:
A team member asks a process question. For instance – I’ve noticed we have all the managers on one side of the table and everyone else on the other. Did anyone else notice this? What’s the impact of that on how we are working together? What do we want to do about it?

My heart would leap for joy as this action demonstrates a member of the team has embodied team self-regulation. After the session, I might ask the participant if s/he considered certifying as an Action Learning Coach and provide web links for him/her to get more information about certification if they expressed interest.

This has happened in Action Learning sessions that I have coached and I always love to see it. Some participants will notice power dynamics and process. AL teams regularly notice variable participation and sometimes proactively address it. A participant that takes it further to ask the group if they are observing the same thing (confirming or disconfirming and checking in with the others), asking if it is affecting the team’s performance, and asking the team if it should be addressed is attending to group process, attending to the team’s performance and safety, and is highly desirable behavior and highly effective for team performance in Action Learning. It is what we learn in Foundations, CALC1 and CALC2 and then move out into the world as practitioners.

Like the comments above, I will be so happy to observe this. It is always better that participants in the meeting realise the “problem” and intervene. This means that they team is learning well, realising the impact without even the coach having to come in.
