As an AL coach, I would get the team together and check the motivational level of stand between 1 and 10, then I will open up to the problem presenter to state his/her cause for help. This would in turn with questions being asked as to how the implementation would be done. Once the team has gone round asking questions then I would intervene by asking the PP whether he/she was helped and how, now he would go about implementing the actions. Upon the sharing session I would conclude with a positive note on how by asking relevant questions and learning from it can move the team to a positive mode

What I understand from this scenario is that the AL session has reached the point where the PP is already being asked for actions to be taken, and that the PP, as part of the action, is now seeking help from the team. If so, as an AL coach I would recognize the call for help as part of the PP’s action steps, and proceed with a quick round just getting affirmation or confirmation from the team of their willingness to support the PP, with the understanding that the specific measures can be discussed after the AL session. Afterwards, I’ll proceed with asking the PP if he was helped, and how he was helped.

asks the problem presenter, “whether the previous problems had been done clearly?”
and then ask the team, “whether the team would help PP to solve next problem (implementation)?” if the team answered yes, the coach will continue with ask problem presenter explained further problems (implementation). If the team says no, the coach will clarify the PP, “whether the PP agree if the problem (implementation) will discussed in another session?”

If the PP presenter asks the group for help implementing I would listen to the responses of the group. Are there more questions? Is there an offer of help? Do the group seek clarification of what help is needed? Depending upon the conversation and degree of comfort I may check with the group if they want to cover this further?

As long as the ‘statements in response to questions’ was being adhered to I would stay out of the way.

I’ve had public sessions where the problem presenter was able to recruit help implementing her solutions – simply by asking the participants if anyone was willing.

As the action learning coach, I will do the following :
    1. I will ask the Problem Presenter (PP), what he / she want from the team, with following question : “PP, what do you want from the team to support you ?”, and PP will explain what he / she want.
    2. After that, I will ask the team, with following question : “So team, what we gonna do to support PP ?”, and some of the team members will explain their own opinions.
    3. After that, I explain to the team that the current action learning sessions have to end now and after that they can discuss more about the PP request, with statement : “And team, if we wanna discuss more about PP request, let me end first of this current action learning sessions”.
    4. After that, I’ll continue the procedure of action learning coach.

    Thank you.

Since Commitment to Actions by the PP happens towards the end of the session, I will remind the team that Learnings still need to be surfaced for them. I will, however, ask them, “How do you want to address PP’s call for help in implementing his/her action steps?” and get a few answers. Most likely, the team will continue the discussion offline if anyone is willing to help the PP.

i would ask the team whether any of the team member is willing to help the problem presenter to assist on the implementation and observe the reaction of the whole team.

It could be a case where all of the participants at the session are part of the same organization, and the breakthrough strategy may not only affect the PP’s department but other department’s as well, or the actions may actually require the involvement of other departments. If the PP directly addresses the group with the question, then as the AL Coach, I would allow the AL process to continue, and let team members to respond to this question. If team members do not respond, then as coach, I would ask the PP how she/he would wish for the team to assist or ask the team what are their views on the PP’s request for assistance.

An opportunity to ask: ‘What do you recall about the role of the Action Learning Coach from the ground rules?”

A good follow up questions might also be: “Is that question directed only to me, or can anyone answer that question?”

Both might be good opportunities for learning…

The problem presenter should be allowed to ask the team for help. In more cases where AL is introduced it is within an organisation where the team members consist of from other Departments within the organisation. Therefore given the combination of expertise the PP can pose a question to seek the assistance of members to implement relevant solutions. During the reflection I may ask: how members feel about being asked to assist?
