Scenario: Deep Learning
As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:
When checking in with the team they have a particularly deep learning around something they identified. You still have one more thing on your list of potential learnings.

This is a situation that I would weigh based on the deep learning they identified, how the group is doing with processing that learning and what the additional learning item is that I’ve identified. Is my topic a road block for the group to move forward effectively? Is this topic small in scope and can wait so learning can continue on current topic? Is my topic related to the learning they have identified? A few things I would consider in the moment:
– If the group is intensely focused on the learning and the additional item would be a distraction, I would note it and wait for this learning to come up again, chances are that it will
– If my additional topic is related to the topic they have identified, I would bring it up and let the group decided what do to with it
– If the item I have identified is big enough (i.e., it’s a roadblock for them moving forward), I would bring it up and let the group decided where to go with it

The unique thing about AL is being able to balance “action” with “learning”. If the team finds insight towards identifying particularly deep learning, as an Action Learning coach I would devote a little time towards its discussion, especially if the learning is supportive towards increasing competencies and/or problem solution.

I would ask the team whether anyone has any further learnings.
In action learning, the learnings belong to the team members.
I would find the other opportunity later when the potential learning will come up and I will ask the team to provide feedbacks to it,

I would draw on the team’s identification of the deep learning, and probe it by asking for examples and when it can be applied in settings outside of the team session, such as in their daily lives at work. This would help the entire team to consolidate the learning and claim their learning as leaders. The team’s learning is significant; therefore, I will not introduce the one I noted, except if it helps to reinforce the one they identified. If the opportunity presents based on the progress in the next period of discussion, I would introduce it in the next check-in, or as an example of demonstrating a leadership skill, if appropriate.

WOW! I cannot add a thing. It is about the team. I would let my nugget drop for the moment and let the depth of the current learning be fully absorbed.

As it is a deep learning, it may be valuable to help the team to explore how this learning relates to them at the personal and emotional level.
I would ask: How does this learning mean to you personally? How do you feel about this learning?
