Scenario: Questions/Answers
As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:
During an intervention you ask “How are we doing taping all the knowledge in the room?” A participant says “We are asking questions and (s)he (the problem presenter) is answering them – isn’t that the rule?”

I would ask the group the following 4 questions in this order:
1. “Would someone please remind us about the process we have agreed to use?” Hopefully one of the participants will remember that anyone can ask a question of anyone at any time. If not, I would reacquaint them with this fact;
2. “Would you like to know what I am observing on how the group is working?” I would provide an honest account of what I’m seeing and how that may or may not impact on the group dynamic and leadership skills each individual has identified;
3. “As the problem presenter, how are you feeling about the quality or activity of the group in helping you to discover a breakthrough strategy?” The problem presenter can respond in an honest and candid way; and
4. “Who has the next question?”

I would ask someone to restate the ground rules. Then I would ask, “does the problem presenter have any questions for the group?”

Ask the group what are the two ground rules.
After they recite the ground rules, ask them what they could be missing out if the questions are just addressed to the problem presenter.

Be careful about being directive. As coach we only raise behaviors to awareness and let the team decide the impact and what to do about it.
I would ask the person who said this – What is the ground rule?
If they don’t have a quick answer – Team, what is that ground rule?
What does that mean about who may ask questions?
What does that mean about who is allowed to answer questions?

As an Action Learning coach it requires new muscles to be strengthened. The ability to attune to a new frequency. Our old habitual nature as a facilitator/consultant/trainer/team member can lead to conditioned responses that not consistent with our role as an Action Learning Coach. I see the opportunity for as a coach for greater self awareness and the reminder to stay curious, positive in the question(s) i ask. Never assuming the answer.

I will ask the team to state the 2 ground rules again.
I will then emphasize the part about, anyone can ask anyone questions.
I will then ask them about the impact of not having everyone ask and answer questions.
I will then ask them about the steps they want to do moving forward.

Intervention as follows:
1. What is the ground rules?
2. Othen than the questions asked of the problem presenter, what can be the questions flow?
3. What would be the impact of situation if we miss the questions from the problem presenter?
4. What can we do better to ensure that we do not miss the questions from the problem presenter?

I would ask the participants :
” Do you agree with him?why?”
mostly ,they would say no, and explain it is not the meaning of the ground rule.
if unfortunately they say yes, then I have to ask the participants to restate our rule.
Next I may ask: “What is the impack of missing the questions from problem precenter.”
then I will ask “who has the next question” to quit the intervention

I would say:
Could I ask someone to please remind us of the ground rules we agreed to at the start of the question?
Then I would watch their reactions to see if they are making the connection. Otherwise, I would ask: what would be the impact if we continue to ask questions as we have been?
Then I would ask, who has the next question.

I would ask for the group: “Can anyone read what is the first rule of the action learning process? What is the impact of not following this rule? How the group would like to manage this rule from now one?”

I would ask to the team: Who would like to answer the question that our colleague did? And if we continue with a misunderstanding comprehension I will reinforce the two objectively rules that we strictly follow in Action Learning.

I will pose the following question to the group: “Team, what are the two ground rules of Action Learning?”

I would first ask if someone could repeat the first ground rule. I would then bring attention to the second part of it, i.e. “anyone can ask anyone”, by checking with the team, “Do you notice where questions have been directed to so far?”, followed by “What might be the impact of only directing questions to PP?”
