As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:

A member if the team doesn’t understand the process and decides “EVERYONE” doesn’t understand.

I would seek for clarification from the group. First, I’d ask the group to rate their understanding of the process on a scale of 1-10. I’d ask them individually and ask the member in question last so as not to influence the group members’ rating any further. After hearing the scores, I’d ask members to write down what they ‘do’ understand about process, and ask them to read this to the group. Again, I’d have the member in question read last. After affirming what is correctly stated by group members, I’d ask the group if they’d like my perspective on where we may need some clarification? After providing this clarification (assuming an affirmative request), I’d ask if they have any additional questions about the process.
Next, I’d ask the following questions: How are we doing with understanding the process put forward? Why is it important that we understand that process? How can we make sure that this understanding continues to happen within this team?

This situation could result from resistance. I would ask the question: do you recognize this? and have this question answered individually with yes or no.
Then I would ask what is needed to clarify the process in order to start or to continue with the session.

I would ask everyone to write down one question they have about the process. ” Each person reads their question and let the group answer it. (It’s OK if they don’t have a question) If needed I would move to asking, “Who would like to share the rules of the process?” Then ask,” Who would like to share my role as a coach? And, “What else is helpful to understand about the process?”

I would lean in and say that it seems like there is confusion about the process and ask if it would be helpful to go over the ground rules again. I would explain the ground rules and ask if everyone has a clear understanding of the process. If yes, “Who has the next question.” If no, I would ask what is unclear and then explain further (or have another member of the group explain).

This is an interesting situation because it tells you al lot about the way this individual thinks, feels and his emotional stability at this point. I would start to ask the group of anyone can help me out by explaining the rules to this individual. If someone stands up I can check if I explained it in the right way. This is great (free) feedback for myself. When nobody responds I would ask the group if I should explain the proces again and which part in particular.

As you cannot know why the person decides for the group and AL is about group learning, I would explore on that aspect by asking to the group if this is correct. If the group states it is, I would ask what is necessary to explain again on the proces to correct that. If the group does not confirm this I would ask them to help the person to get clarity and see what happens.
