First I will do my best to not jump for joy midway through the discussion 🙂

I would take special note of how the participant is displaying this (verbatim, body language, etc), and its impact in helping: (a) the problem presenter in clarifying his/her issues and possible solutions; (b) the rest of the team in their own learning opportunities; and (c) this participant’s contribution to the discussion.

And then I’ll make sure to set aside a bit more time at the end for the reflections on learnings.

    What a leader!
I would take down notes of how his/her questions have been very helpful to the team: its impact on the discussion, how it led to other questions and insights. If the other members built on his questions, i would also note that down. In addition, I would also note if the group energy is high because of his/her contribution as a leader.
At the end of the session, I would ask feedback from the group on the impact of this leadership behavior and how this affects the team and the organization.

In this situation, I would intervene with questions on
    – Team, can each of you rate how often that you practice the leadership skill 1 from not practicing to 10 excellence practicing?
    – Then, How importance that we need to practice leadership skill in Action Learning?
    – Then, How we as a Team could help every member to have a chance to practicing the leadership skill?

After this intervention, Coach may still need to monitor on the member who showed the strongly exemplifies leadership skills. The above intervention may help him to help others in team to express and practice leadership skill.

As a Coach I would intervene with the following questions:-
    – Team , can you rate yourself on practicing your leadership skill from 1 is not practicing to 10 outstanding practicing?
    – Team, Can you tell why we need to practice your leadership skill?
    – Then, following with as a Team how we could help every member practice the leadership skill?

With this intervention, the member who strongly exemplifies the leadership skills, may help others to express and practice the leadership skill.

However, coach still need to monitor and follow up.

As an AL coach I would quickly intervene as a learning point, asking the team to reflect on what the participant has exemplified, and than provide my comments as a learning opportunity. This case in point reminds me of Ken Blanchard’s statement, ‘catch them doing something right’. I may bring this up again in summary as reinforcement

A good thing happened and can be used as example, after that coach should take the chance to intervene the team with,

“I’ve observe practice of Strongly Leadership skill used in this discussion, has anyone observed this?”
“What is the impact for the team?” to direct team of reflecting the use of leadership skill to help problem solving.

And following question is to make another team member use their leadership skill, with question “has another team member do the same way (practicing leadership skill) ?”

    “what could the team help?”

I would allow the moment to play out fully and then do an checkin –
I’d start with the standard 3 questions – How are we doing as a team? What are we doing well? What can we do better?

Ideally someone from the team would point out the leadership when asked – What are we doing well? (It is always better if someone from the team notes it rather than the coach).

If no one mentions the leadership skill – I would follow with I noticed a great example of – Did anyone else notice that?

Assuming someone says yes – what’s the impact of that skill being used on the team’s problem solving?
Assuming everyone says no – How about when did ? From here we would get the yes and can ask the impact question.

I’d finish with how can we all make sure to practice out leadership skills during the remainder of the session?

    Happy Coaching
