Scenario: Self Conversation
As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:
Someone answers their own question, without waiting for a response from anyone else.

Firstly I will ask the team if they recognize the situation with the question “Team, I have just learned that the previous question was asked and answered by a same person. What impact do you think it will be if we keep doing that?”. After the answers, I will go to find out the team’s decision to prevent it from happening again with the question “What should we do, team, to make better questions and answers from now on?”

It’s the learning opportunity for the team. I will intervene with question “Team, what is the phenomenon appeared?” Giving them a break state to do reflection. If team aware, I will continue question ‘Who has the next question?’. If no one get to the point, I will ask question “What will be affected if questions were asked and answered by same person without waiting for other responses?”

I may leave this to happen if it was once as it I may help in letting the conversation flow on the other hand if it was reoccurring I will intervene and ask the team “If anyone else want to answer the question other than the person that have asked it”

If this was towards the end of the Action Learning session and the individual who asked the question had an epiphany as they asked their question, I would ask the question,” What is the impact on the team of being the first person to answer your own question?”

I would tell the person ” I observed that you asked a question and replied to it yourself. Was that a reflection/insight from your end or a question for the team?” If the person replied that it was for the team, I will then ask the team ” What impact will it have on the team when the team is not given the chance to answer a question first?” or ” What is the impact of being the first person to reply to your question on the team?”

I hardly think it could happen at the end stage of WIAL. I guess if this situation happens at very start point of WIAL, this is very learning opportunity. I would ask the team “Do you notice what just happen our team?” I would give them a break moment to reflect themselves. And If the team point out the situation, I will go next. But if not, I would ask the team “what would have an impact on our team if questions were asked and answered by same person?” And I would ask again “what would you do if this situation happen again?”

I would use this as an opportunity for awareness.
I’ve observed someone answering their questions before allowing others the opportunity to answer. Did anyone else notice that?
How curious are we being if we answer our own questions?
In problem solving – why is it important that we be truly curious?
How can we be even more curious as we move forward?

I would intervene by asking “What has just happened team?” If unnoticed I would ask “I noticed that a question was asked and answered by the same person. What will the impact be in problem solving if this keeps happening?” “How diverse would our ideas and perspective be if we keep doing this?” Finally I would ask “How can we address this matter to ensure we obtain diverse ideas and perspective?”

I will intervene by asking the team what they notice is happening . After a couple or three responses, I will ask add another learning question as to what happens to their team discussion when the same person who ask the question also gives the answer? TheI, lastly, I will ask them how they want to proceed from there.

Then I will ask them, what could be done to improve the situation? And, lastly, I will ask them how they want to proceed from there.

I could do it 2 ways:
As a police intervention: “Are you answering your own question?” “What do you really want to ask the group so that they can help you ?”
As an awareness” “Are you answering your own question?” “what is the impact of not being curious about what others have to share?” “Team, how can we be more curious moving forward in this session to ?

I would do the intervention using, “I have observed that the person asking the question started answering their own question before allowing the group to engage, did anyone else observe that? Then listen. What do you think is the impact on the group? What can we do differently? I would listen for their answers and see if they are articulating that asking questions is powerful when you couple it with intentional listening … a desire to hear from others. If they miss that idea, I might share that thought.

I would lean in, and ask the team “Do you notice what just happen?” then give a break moment to reflect. And If the team point it out, I would go next. If not, I would ask “what is the impact to the team if questions were asked and answered by the same member? What would we do to improve?”

I will let it go for a while in order to keep the conversational flow of the team. After that person completes his answer for his own question, I will make notice to him: do you realize that you have just answered your own question, do you want to have an answer from the PP? And ask the PP how he would like to handle the questions? Depends on the situation then, I would keep going on in this learning opportunity by asking the person “How do you find two answers, yours and the PP’s , similar or different? Then I will ask the team: “How the diversity and similarity would help us in solving a problem?” The team will get to the point that it is more beneficial when seeking for new and different ideas from team

I would intervene and ask, “Who are you directing this question to?” or “Who can you direct this question to?” If the situation persists, I would ask, “What have we done well?” and “What can we do better?” and allow the team members to bring up their observations.

I’ll intervene by asking, who would you like to ask? If he just wants to talk to himself, I’ll repeat ground rules. If he asks everyone, then I’ll ask team, who want to answer the question just now?
If this situation happens again, I will intervene by asking, I just noticed that the same person who ask the question also gives the answer, what is the impact on us? How can we do better?

As the action learning coach, I would intervene, by asking either asking the group, what did they just observe? That could be followed up with another question, what is the impact of this way of responding? I would then reiterate the ground rule, and ask the person posing the question who would they like to direct the question to?

If 1st time happen;
“Who is the person you would like to ask?”
If many time happen;
“Are you answering your own question?” and why
“Team, what is the impact if team can answer that question?”
“Team, how can we help to improve this session to be better?
