Scenario: Takeover

As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:

In the midst of a corporate problem that deals with developing a business development strategy for an organization with declining business, the company is purchased by a large conglomerate.

    i would stop the session and get in contact with the new management. perhaps they have experience with AL. if not, i’ll introduce AL with a question from the actual situation.

    I would put it to the team how to handle it. As this becomes a new client – I would approach the new leadership also to introduce Action Learning.

    A takeover does not necessarily result in a solution to the problem that the team may be working on. I do agree with Bea that it is best to redirect to the team for a consensus on moving forward. Action Learning has its merits and it would be prudent to meet with the new management to share what the team might have been working on. It is possible that they may wish to continue the project. Even so, the takeover presents an opportunity to utilize Action Learning to proactively deal with the organizational change .

    I would ask the group how they’d like to proceed, and how we can best serve the new organization. I would also request a meeting with the new leadership team to make sure they understand Action Learning and want the group to continue. I would also ask for a new senior champion for the team.

    I would convene the group together and ask them how they would like to proceed. During this meeting, I would discuss the value of action-learning even during an acquisition, such as for the management of complex organizational problems, improving team effectiveness, documenting knowledge, and transferring knowledge. I would also consider meeting with the new management team and advocate for the continuation of action learning because of its value.
