Scenario: Windows

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:

The team is working on a porch with windows around three sides. As the session starts two participants stand up at the same time. One walks to one side of the room and closes a window, the other walks to the other and opens a window.

I would say to the group, “I’ve noticed team members are opening and closing windows. Has anyone else noticed that?” If the answer is yes, I’d ask “How does the group want to handle that?” If the answer is no, I’d ask each person who opened and closed the window, “What were you hoping to accomplish by opening/closing a window?” Followed by, “And what does the group think about that?”

As the AL Coach, I would ask the group the following questions:

    1. I observe that two members of the group have adjusted the windows. What is the impact of the selected environment/ location on the session?
    2. How can we make the environment more comfortable for all participants?

The feedback from the group would determine whether the session should be moved to another location, or generally how the group should proceed.

Did anyone else just notice what happened?
What are the implications to the group?
How does the group want to handle the environment issue?

Ask: Does the group want to set any norms about how we create an environment that is comfortable for everyone?

Or: I am noticing that windows are being opened and closed, is this something that the group wants to address?
And: What is the impact of this on the group.

“I observed that members of the group just got up while the session started and adjusted the windows?”

    “Did anyone else observe that?”

“What impact do their actions have on the group?”

“How could that have been done differently”

“Would the group like to establish any norms for when members have to the leave the table for any reason?

“What can we do to make the members more comfortable in these surroundings?”

Great answer. We want to stay focused on behaviors and not people so all our questions should relate just to the behaviors.

    My questions would be –

I’ve observed Windows being opened and closed, did anyone else notice that?
    (Obvious answer)
What’s the impact on the team when an individual makes a choice that impacts the team without checking with the rest of the team?
What should our norm be for making decisions that impact the team?

    Happy coaching
