Scenario: Open Answer
As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:
You ask the team – “how are we doing on a scale of 1 – 10”, and get a response “I think we could be blah blah blah …”

As coach I would warmly intervene and redirect the participant to respond only to the question being asked, and repeat the question. Depending on my reading of the individual concerned I might also ask then to park that thought for the moment.

I will say ” Thank you for your enthusiastic response. Your ideas are valuable. In order to have a compared information with our previsous or later evaluation on team performance, let’s give a score first. Then we share our ideas later. “

I would intervene to avoid the open answer affecting the team and ask again the rating. At the same time, I will let that participant know I will follow up on what we can do better in the later stage.

I would cut the person off and repeat — My question was on a scale of 1 – 10 how are we doing as a team.

I would stop the person and repeat my question. If the person insists, I will mention that person will have an opportunity to voice out later, but for now, I want just a quick answer from everyone.

I would lean in and kindly ask the person to answer my question by rating in scale, in order to have a comparison with others of the team. After all rating is over, I would give the opportunity to discuss what to do.

I would not wait unil the end of the talk but simply repeat the question: How we are doing as a team on a scale 1-10.

Like the coaches above I would repeat my question and ask firmly “Can each of you just give a number from 1-10, with no explanation?” If the team members then not getting it, I would ask it again and explain that after they answer we will have time to share what is going well and what could be done better.

I would politely intervene and ask “would you like to just give me the number 1-10 without any explaination?”

When it happens the first time, I’d wait until a pause and repeat the question. If it happens for the ump-th time, I would ask the team member if the request to give a rate is clear. Ultimately, the coach can even ask the team to comment on the situation — I’m sure they’ll have something to say.

As an Action Learning coach I will interrupt the person in question in a correct way. I will explain that it is better for the Action Learning process if everyone mentions short a scale between 1 – 10. In the next round we can briefly make recommendations to improve the quality.

As a coach, I would ask them to pause, hold that thought and let the participant know that we only need quick # rating and will get to the additional details momentarily.

As a coach, I will direct members to focus on my answer by repeat my question “how are we doing on a scale of 1 – 10” and continue asking that member ” What is your point from 1-10″

Intervene: Team, what type of question am I asking? Close-ended or open-ended? What type of answer should you give? On a scale if 1-10, what is your number?

I would interrupt the statement: “For now, if you enter 1-10, I will ask for more details in a moment”.
