Scenario: Catching Up

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation:

A team member isn’t participating. During the checkin they say that were lost and confused by the discussion and they were trying to figure out what was going on.

This is a difficult and uncomfortable situation. I would ask them why they felt this way, what it would be like if they were not feeling lost and what they could have done to stay connected to the discussion. It would also check if the perception was only part of the group or of all. At the end of the session, I would do a great self-analysis about how often I could not guarantee that the process would proceed as planned and how it might have contributed to the group ending the session with a positive and future view of the problem.

As an Action learning coach, I would use the early intervention and state my observation. Then ask the group how can we get member “X” more involved and caught up to speed? That way each participant is participating in the process and member “X” lets down his barriers and start to speak freely and get involved.

I would ask the team member what they would need to better understand the discussion, then ask the team how they could help the other team member better understand the discussion or what can they do as a team to ensure every member is able to follow/understand the discussion and participate.

As an action learning coach, I would let the team explore and decide how they would like to approach the situation. I could ask questions such as:
“What would help the team to be clear again on what is happening? What else?”
“How do we know are clear again?”
“What does the team decide to do?”

And I would also check-in after some time to see whether the team has achieved the goal.

I as the Action Learning Coach would intervene the team by asking my observation when somebody of the team didn’t keep present into the session. I would use the SID intervention model like below question:
    – Team, I noticed that some of the team members didn’t keep present into the session. What is happening?
    – What is the impact of not present into the session?
    – What could we do better?

A team member isn’t participating. During the checkin they say that were lost and confused by the discussion and they were trying to figure out what was going on.

To boost up participation for some of team members, my intervention should start by getting the group get into the same page. I’ll ask the whole group “In the past 10 minutes, what are we currently questions and answers?”. Then, I’ll let the group flow with summary of questions and answers. Next, I’d ask “How are we doing with our participation?”, “what should we do to make better participation?”.
However, if using this approach for quite a while but it seems not working well, as an AL coach I may consider to ask “Who doesn’t ask question yet?” or I may direct my intervention to that team member “What is your question?”.

It is essential for the Action Learning process that everybody is participating.
In this situation an early intervention is needed to connect the team again.
    Questions would be:
-I observe that one team member is not participating because this person is lost. How can the group help him/her to get everything clear again.
-On the other hand how can you as lost person still be of any value in the group proces? If the discussion is difficult, what kind of question can you ask to get involved again?

I would intervene with: “What should the team do now to engage all partcipants into the discussion and ensure that we are moving together toward the solution that we all agree on?” “What questions you may ask each other in order to ensure clarity of the purpose and engagement of every participant?”
