Scenario: Favorite Tool

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: Your favorite tool for diagraming a problem is a mind map. You know doing this would help the team see this problem much more clearly.

    I would follow the first intervention of the script and not use another tool.
    In the problem exploration phase, I would make an intervention and ask the group: Do we have consensus on the problem? Yes or No
    If there is no consensus, we would continue another 10 minutes asking questions to explore the issue.

    How are we doing at relating different facts and ideas concerning this problem. How are we on our understanding of interrelationships concerning the issue being discussed. Would the team like to use some technique to do this. What will be the impact of using a technique or tool to do this

    As an Action Learning Coach I would not get involved with the problem/content but focus on the Learning. Also I would only ask questions during an AL session for all my interventions. Some of my questions in this scenario would be

    1. Do we have an agreement on the problem?

    If there is an agreement on the problem and it is established by each team member writing their interpretation of the problem which the team agrees is the same or ‘close’ , I would let the team proceed by asking “Who has the next question?”

    If there is no agreement and it continues to be that way for another 10-15 minutes, I would ask

    2. Would the team be helped if they could see the problem visually?
    3. Can the team think of any tool or method they can use which would help the team see the problem more clearly as a picture?

    I would then let the team continue with whatever they choose in the moment to make progress.

    As a coach, I will use the process to guide the team and let the team members decide on the mechanism that works for them.

    Mind mapping would be in my mind the best tool, however, the team members may have a different process to dissect the issue in hand. I just need to trust the process and let it move forward.

    This scenario likely touches on one of the most challenging aspects of being a coach: I must avoid the temptation to jump into “problem solving” mode especially if I am technically astute about the topic being discussed and/or I have a tool, like a mind map, that I’m chomping at the bit to introduce. Instead, I would intervene and ask each team member to write down on a scale of 1 to 5 how they are doing with problem solving. And then, use the self-ratings to spark a discussion about what’s working/not working in that regard. If there is general discontent around problem solving, I could then ask, “What methods to get to consensus on the problem might someone suggest?”

    As an Action Learning Coach I would not get involved with the problem/content but focus on the Learning. Some of my questions in this case would be:

    Lets write it down, ask each member to read what he/she has written.
    2. Is there an agreement ? Yes or No
    then I will ask ” Who has the next question ? then I will let team performance and consensus on problem about 10-15 minutes then I would ask
    3. What is the best use of our time ?
    4. How can we visualize this ?
    5. What are some other possibilities that would help our team see the problem more clearly as a picture?
    6. Who has the next question ?
    I would then let the team continue with whatever they choose in the moment to make progress.
