As an action learning coach in this situation, I would say, “I’m noticing that several team members are sitting with their arms folded across their chest. What’s the impact on the group? What kind of body postures/positions would bring the most energy and enthusiasm to helping the team move the problem forward today?

This could be a potential opportunity for establishing a norm. For example, “I’ve noticed several team members sitting with their arms folded across their chests. Did anyone else notice that? What’s the impact of such body language on the team? What should our norm be for receptive, engaged body language?”

As an action learning coach I would ask the team generally, “Is anyone else noticing what I’m noticing? If at least one team member responds “yes” and identifies the nonverbals through a descriptive statement, I would ask the team, “Why are nonverbal behaviors important when interacting as a team”? After the team responds I would add, “How might we validate our thoughts on the meaning of these behaviors?” This should lead to a disussion and revelation from those crossing their arms so the team understands the true nature or feelings being epressed.
If no one answers I would state: “I’m noticing a few people crossing their arms” What signals might this be sending to the team”? Then, “How can we validate our assumptions of the meaning behind these signals”? Then, “Why is it important that we respond to nonverbal cues of fellow team members when interacting as a group”? “What impact does this have on our team perforamnce”?

As an action learning coach, I would handle the situation by asking the team, “I see some people crossing their arms. What might this signal to the team?” Then, I’d ask, “How can we verify our assumptions about these signals?” and “Why is it crucial to address nonverbal cues in group settings?” Lastly, I’d question, “How does this affect our team performance?”

I would ask, “I noticed that some members are sitting with arms folded across the chest. Anyone else noticed it?” “I am wondering is there any emotion behind the gesture? I am just a little bit afraid that the emotion behind, if it does exist, might influence our current discussion.” “What do we learn from the discussion just now?” “What would you do next in order to make our discussion more effectively?”

As a coach, I would intervene and ask “I have an observation. Some members are sitting with their arms folded across their chest. Why do we have this posture?” and invite the members to answer. Then I’ll ask “What is the impact of this posture? How does body language affect the conversations?” and invite the group to discuss. Then ask “During the discussion, what are the appropriate postures or body language?”

As ALC, I would ask te group:”Is there anything you notice when you look at non-verbal communication in the group?”
Then there are 2 options:
1: They notice that members are sitting with arms folded. My question: What does this means?
2: Nobody notice that members are sitting with arms folded. Me: Telling my opbservation en ask the question: What does this means?

I’ll ask the team as a coach.
“I observe the team and see several team members are sitting with their arms folded across their chest, Anyone see that like me?
team respond
” How the team feeling when you see several team members are sitting with their arms folded across their chest?
Team respond
“what’s the impact to the team if many members are doing as this posture?”
Team respond
“So what’s the team plan to solve this situation for the team to learn?”

I would ask the group: I noticed how you were sitting, did you notice that? When people have noticed, continue to ask, “Does this pose have any special meaning?” Exploring the participants’ true feelings and states, and guiding them to reflect and learn from them are the focus of this intervention.
