I would lean in and intervene as a coach, asking: what kind of questions would be most useful to explore the problem in these early stages?

It also depends on what was the context of the session and the problem shared in this session. However, I would intervene by asking “Hello team, what kind of question is it?” (because this team is very new to AL and may need to be trained informally on questioning skill). Then if they still think that’s a open question, I would ask “what do you team want to get out by asking that question”. After that I would ask “how can you ask differently to get exactly what you want to know (information you want to gain) from PP (or from the person who is being asked question)

As the main rule is about “asking questions”, not about “asking open-ended questions”, I would skip this opportunity for learning. First, they need to get used to asking questions generally. I would ask them about the quality of the questions: 1) if I notice that all questions they’re asking are closed – i.e. 5 in a row, or 2) during the first intervention, so that the whole team reflects on that, not only one person.

I would let it slide and observe how the conversation flows. As the rules only state that anyone can ask anyone questions and statements in response to questions. Hence, they are not breaking the rules. However, closed ended questions are time consuming. If the team only progresses with close-ended questions, I would take this as a learning opportunity to have the team reflect on the difference between close-ended and open-ended questions.

I would intervene (but softly, because this is just the beginning of the session, and I don’t want the person who asked the question to feel discouraged):
S: First of all, thank you for asking the first question. Team, do you notice this question? What kind of question is this do you think?
I: If we keep asking this type of question, how will this impact the session?
D: How can we improve on this? Can we give this another try?
When someone gives another try, I will softly give feedback and then we proceed with the session.

I had very similar situation. I waited for a while, situation hadn’t changed. So I stopped the discussion for the moment and asked “What do you think – what kind of questions are we asking?” The answer was “Mostly closed”. “How does it impact our discussion?” “Yeah, we should ask more open-ended questions, obviously” “What could be the benefit?” Participants described benefits “So – on what kind of question should we be more focused?” Open-ended. Then during the summary I asked for reflections about asking more open-ended questions.
