This proofs that we cannot control everything that happens around us. As an Action Learning Coach, I would strictly follow security protocols, interrupt the session and return after normalizing the situation with a question: from what has just happened, what does the group want to do?

The immediate need would be to ensure everyone’s safety first. Once the threat has been dealt with and we resume the session (whether immediately after if a false alarm or after a certain period) I would ask the group how they would want to proceed from the recent event that happened.

I would make an immediate intervention and ask the group: do we have an emergency group? What will be our conduct to respond to the emergency and ensure the safety of the group?

Common sense prevails here. First I would try to keep calm and then check if the team is aware of the fire escape route. Secondly if any of the team members need help (if they are wheelchair-bound or using crutches) I would ask other able-bodied team members to provide assistance in getting out of the room in a safe and orderly manner. As a AL Coach, I would be the last to leave to ensure no none is left behind.

In this situation, I would prioritize the safety of the team. First, I will ask the team to calm down so that we may properly evacuate the premises. Next, I will ask the team if they know where the nearest emergency exit is. Should the members know, I will have one of them lead us in an orderly manner to the emergency exit. Should none of the members know, I will take it upon myself to keep the team together with me as I look for the nearest emergency exit.

Safety first: I would stop the session and state we will resume in due course and then take the lead to get everyone out via the emergency exit.

As action learning coach, I would interrupt the session and advice the group to follow the security rules, leaving the building quickly by the nearest emergency exit. In Brazil is law to training some part of the team to guide the others in this kind of situation, so, I would ask if someone there is part of this team brigade and probably this person would support me to guarantee that everybody left the room and followed the security rules.
If it was a false alarm and we would be able to return later to the room I would ask to the team how they would like to procedure after this situation

As an Action Learning Coach, I’ll intervene the team by following statement.
– I heard the fire alarm is ringing.
– What’s the impact to the team focus?
– How could we make sure the safety during this session?

If a fire alarm sounds, I will intervene like this: “Team, have you heard the alarm sound?” (S) How might this sound affect the team? (I) “Some members suggested we stop the process temporarily and go out of this building. How about the other members’ opinions? (D).

I terminate the session and go through the evacuation process. After resuming the session, or if this is not possible at the next session, I can ask the team what this situation has taught us.
