Scenario: Limited Choice
As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:
Someone asks an open question, then follows it with a couple choices for the response.

As this is a leaning opportunity for the team to be specific with question and not to make statement, I will intervene with bringing the team to reflect on Ground rule which stated that, “statements only in response to question” and with a question “Team! from the scale 1-10, where are we now?” This is to allow the team member that asked the open question to rephrase his/her question to the other members for response instead of giving choices of answers.

As an Action Learning Coach, I would intervene and ask the team about the type of questions being asked. I would then ask them about the impact of asking these types of questions. Afterwards, I would ask them how they would want to move forward knowing about the impact of these types of questioning.

As an ALC I would intervene with the question, “What is the question you are asking now ?”
I want them to rephrase their original question- without giving options.

Intervene with learning opportunity. I will ask “Team, do you notice what kind of questions being asked?” Let them reflect and answer. If members get the point, then carry on progress. If no, ask “What will be the impact of asking open-ended question with choices for response?”.

I do not think it is wrong to provide options for an open-ended questions. The person who is asking the question may simply wants to confirm something and he does not know how to phrase the questions. So, as a coach, I may intervene by asking the person who is asking the question to either rephrase his/her questions or remind him/her to be more precise with the questions.

I would intervene and ask” what types of questions did we ask? Closed or open questions?” Some may say closed questions and some may say open questions. An open questions followed with choices are actually closed questions. I will lead the team to reflect the pros and cons for these types of questions. And ask them “what are the better ways to ask for the next questions?”

I would ask “Team, on the scale 1-10, what is the level of participation of everyone in helping the problem presenter define the solutions to the problem?” I ask this question because I want to get everybody to do reflection if everybody is participating and not just one person giving the answer. If this question does not help much, I would add “Team, what do you think the team can do so that everyone of us can contribute ideas and solutions to the problem?”

Als Action Learning coach zou ik heel even kijken hoe het team reageert. Als er geen reactie komt en iemand ingaat op de gelimiteerde keuzes, zou ik een interventie plegen omdat hier een leermogelijkheid ligt. Ik zou de groep vragen hoe zij tegen de vraag aankijken: is dit volgens hen een open of een gesloten vraag? Voelen zij zich uitgedaagd of juist beperkt door de gelimiteerde vraag? Hoe zou de vraagsteller de vraag kunnen stellen waarin de opties die zij zelf ziet ook aan bod komen? Wordt de vraag helderder door de limitering of juist niet?
