Scenario: Multiple Behaviors

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: Each participant identifies a leadership skill to work on for the session. These skills are captured on the white board. By the end of the session it’s apparent that all the team members have actually practice their own skill and several of the skills that were captured on the white board.

In presenting how each person perceived themselves in the skill, I would ask if they were aware that they went beyond and ended up practicing others on the board. I would ask the meaning and benefit of this event. In closing I would ask the group what they gained from experiencing this phenomenon.

Probably as an action learning coach, I would avoid to reach to the end of the session to ask to the group ” How are we doing practicing the choosen skills?” . However, if the case is by de end of the session, I would ask for each one “You were working on the skills X. How do you think you did? Then, I would ask to the group how do they focused on their choosen skills? “How was the impact of not focused on that? and “How can we do better on next session?”

I will note whether the team members who are to develop the leadership to be practiced show appropriate behaviors based on the notes and observations of the coach during the action learning process. When reviewing the team’s reflective behavior, I will invite team members to rate themselves from 1-9 for their performance in the action learning process, and then I will invite everyone to give feedback to each other. I will also ask the team members: 1. What behaviors did you demonstrate during the learning process that would enhance your leadership?2. What will you do next to continue to improve your leadership skills? 3. How will you promote better learning in your team?

I still give feedback on the abilities selected by the team members, because I think that’s the one, they care about and want to improve more.

I will invite team members to share their reflection and behavior in the process of discussion in turn, as well as their ability to select training. Then invite other team members to give feedback in combination with discussion observation, and finally give my observation feedback.
