Since the basic rule of action in Action Learning is that ‘statements can only be made in response to a question’, I don’t see the need to carry out an intervention, unless the statements don’t answer the question asked. In this case, I could ask the person “What question are you answering?” and could also ask “Who could remind us what the basic Action Learning rule is?”

One of the two fundamental ground rules of action learning is that statements can be made only in response to a question. That a question yielded multiple responses is not in and of itself a problem. This can be especially pertinent when, for instance, leadership skills such as creativity and problem solving were identified by team members. What I as the coach might ask to the person who asked everyone the question is, “How are these responses helpful to you?” “What questions do you have to clarify any of the responses?”

As a Coach, I think don’t need intervene, unless the content of statements don’t answer the question asked before.
In this case, I will remind all team members” Hello team, I remind the 1st ground rule of Action Learning: Statements only in response to questions. How we are answering for questions?”
If one member continue to make statement is not relevant to the question, I woulk ask him/her: “Hello A, your statement answer for which question?” and next question to all members: “What can we do to improve?”

As an Action Learning Coach has the authoirty to intervene whenever he / she identifies learning opportunities. Has anyone else in the team noticed this?
How are we doing at the moment? What went well? What could be done better?

For this specific situation I noticed that is in accordance with one of the fundamental rules in action learning which says that statements can be make only in response to a question. However, I would intervene asking the group how they feel the impact of having many answers at the same time and if they would like to propose another way of working.

My intervention to the group would be: “How are you feeling the impact of having many statements coming at the same time?” And after I would ask: “How do you feel the group is working to answer the question posted?” And then I would ask: “How does the group wants to work from now?”

As action learning coach: The questions that I will use during the interventions will be
    • Base on last 3-4 responses, how were the character of the answers?
    • What will be the impact to the team?
    • How will we manage to improve for the further session?
