Scenario: Windows(2024)

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: The team is working on a porch with windows around three sides. As the session starts two participants stand up at the same time. One walks to one side of the room and closes a window, the other walks to the other and opens a window.

I would say, “I noticed two of us just had done the opposite thing at the same time. one opened the window and the other closed the window. I am wondering how do all of you feel now? Is there anything need to do to help us get more concentrated on the discussion?” When more suggestion or expectation is raised, I would ask, “Now, we have heard all the need or expectation of us. As a team, what we can do to let us have a more effective discussion for the rest of the session?” Once the team agreed on what to do, I would continue to ask, “What do you learn from what happened just now?”

I will intervene by using SID as a structure:

    – Team, we are currently situated in a lovely porch and I have noticed that some may want the windows open while others want it closed.
    – What does the team feel about our current venue and its ventilation? (Ask all team members one by one.)
    – How does the venue and ventilation affect the team’s performance?
    – What does the team prefer: open windows or closed?

If in the case that they don’t agree on one:
    – If the team is not coming into an agreement, how will this impact our performance?
    – What do you want to do as a team?
    – What is the team’s decision?
