I would ask the group – I notice that xx has not been able to complete the action they agreed to in the last session – What is the impact? and then How would the group like to deal with that?

I would ask the participant (in front of the session) to explain himself to the group. If the session is based on the promised actions, I would cancel the session. Then I would ask the group if it’s usefull to do a session about this subject.

Before we start the session witt all the members, I would ask the participant: “What happened?”, “Do you think it’s a important action for the solution of the problem, which has consensus?” and to all the members: “How does this feel for you” and “What does this mean for the problemstatement of today’s session?”

As an Action Learning coach I want to start a session with a lookback on the previous actions. When I hear that one action has not been set in motion I will not directly ask why. We’ll do an Action Learning session like we normally would. I choose to do this because I don’t want to jeopardize the safe space we have during a session. I’ll ask the team member at another time why he/she didn’t complete the action and what he/she needs to for fill the action.

I would check with the group: How do you feel about this? Next I would ask what the group would like to combine, from this moment, in relation to how we will deal with unfulfilled actions.
And I would add, if there was context: What can we do for this session to be productive?

I would ask that participant if he could explain to the team members what happen. If this session depends on this action, I would ask all team members, “What do you think if we could have the session today?” And will follow the team consensus.
If we continue the session and end with the action. I would ask, “What do we learn about a participant not being able to take action today? What is the impact? What we could do better to support team learning?
