Scenario: Chit Chat

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: Two vocal members chit chatted with each instead of engaging in the problem solving. Their behavior repeated despite the intervention with team consensus to have one conversation at a time.

    The coach should intervene again with an observation of the repeated behavior “I’ve observed that there are still side conversations happening during our session.”
    Then I would follow up with “What is the impact of this behavior?” and have them come up with how they want to address this / create stronger norm for handling this behavior going forward. “What can we do to prevent this behavior from happening in the future?”

    I would intervene again and ask, “How does the group feel in this situation?”, Then I would add: “How do these behaviors affect the quality of our work?” and finally: “What can we do to prevent such situations from happening again?”.

    As an action learning coach, I understand that Problem proposer want to get the sharing from others for her problem so we need to focus on this. So I will ask the team’s permission to temporarily stop the meeting and ask 2 special vocal members that “Is there any personal matter need to discuss and Do you want to leave this room in 5 or 10 minutes to solve your personal matter? I’m sure that after you coming back, PP will find out the solution with your support!”

    As an Action learning trainer, I would intervene and ask “How is the consensus developed in practice in your group?” I would also give feedback that I see that conversations are still going on and would ask: “How does this affect the group” and “How does this affect the goal of the session?”
    I would ask: “What do they need to maintain the previous commitments?” and / or “What the new rules could they introduce in order to achieve the goal of the session.”
    If it turns out that they have an urgent matter that cannot wait and their offsite discussion will last no more than 5 minutes, I would ask the group if we can pause for 5 minutes and then return to the session.

    In this situation, as the action learning coach, I will intervene and ask these questions:
    – “Team, I noticed that there are side conversations still going on during our session. Have you noticed it too?”
    – “What might the impact be to the team and to our session if this behavior continues?”
    – “What can the team do to follow the previous agreement of “one conversation at a time”?
    -“what new rules would you like to introduce if these side conversations are important to team members?”
    – “So team, how would the team like to proceed now?”

    I intervened and informed team members in the case where prior problems were not fixed:
    “Didn’t we agree on what we would like to improve upon in the last session? I notice that the team is not doing what we have agreed upon”
    “If we do not fix this, what are the consequences?”
    “What should we do to fix this, what are the next steps?”

    I will intervene in the following way
    “Team, I observed that there is still a side conversation happening during our session. Previously, we all agreed that this behavior creates negative impact on the effectiveness of our team and we had an agreement that there will be 1 meeting in the room. What should be our new agreement to keep the meeting effectively?”

    “Team, how is going in work as a team to solve the PP challenge?” “How important to work as a team to solve PP challenge?” “What can we do to work as a team happen?”
