Action learning is powerful tool in itself for problem-solving specially for complex problems. To be able to maximize this as a powerful problem-solving tool, the correct empowering questions should be asked. One way to help bring this out is to have a short briefing on the power of asking questions prior to the actual action learning session itself.

If time permits I normally conduct a separate session on the introduction to action learning and the power of asking questions. This is like a pre-activity session before the actual action learning session. In my experience this helps in the flow and it unleashes powerful questions and insightful answers to understand the real problem.

As an Action Learning coach, I understand that Action Learning is already a powerful tool, which does not require the use of other tools. I would do a pre-session training for the group to ask questions during the session.

I considered it to be the way the group works, and I would not interfere or influence the process. Whether the outcome of the discussion was a “good” or “bad” consensus among the group, I would ask, “What do you think caused this result?” I would present my observations to the team for evaluation, and I would say, “I observed that we didn’t use any tools to solve the problem during the whole discussion. What do you think about this situation?” After understanding everyone’s views, I would dig the learning opportunities in them. Also, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the team lacks the framework or approach necessary to solve the problem and lead to ineffective of solving problems.

I would say to the team, “I’ve noticed that we are trying to use action learning. What other methods or tools can we use to help us solve the current problems?” Then ask the participants to express their opinions, and then ask, “what are the positive effects of using some methods on the seminar?” Ask the participants to express their views separately.
