Scenario: Left out(2024)

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: A participant offers to collect information/agreements on a white board. All members are in agreement with this. After a short while the scribe is no longer being included in the conversation.

As an action learning coach I would ask, “Where are all our questions being addressed to?” and, “What is the impact to the team when one member is left out of the discussion? ” This would hopefully address the issue. If needed, I would also add, “How does the group wish to proceed?”

Hello team, I have observed that the “scribe” has not participated in the session for the past 10 minutes, what happened?

What is the impact of this on the team?

What can we do to improve

As an action learning coach, I would intervene by asking: Team, what have you noticed about {team member’s name} level of participation since they became the scribe? OR Team, what have you noticed about who is being included and excluded in this conversation? If they haven’t noticed the trend, I would tell them what I have observed about the scribe’s role.

I would follow-up with a question: What is the impact of not having each team member involved in the full process? Following those responses, I would then ask: How do we want to move forward to ensure everyone is involved?

In my opinion,I would ask, “Team, have you noticed how the team’s work situation is?”. Follow with”If the situation continues, what will happen to the team?” and “What should we do next?”
