Scenario: No Offense

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: A team member says something very offensive – followed by “no offense”

    I would ask the team: “what happened?” I would ask each member to rate their emotional state on a scale of one to 10. Then I would ask: “How do you feel about the comment that was made? What impact does this have on the team? What can the team do about it?” I would then ask, if they witness similar situations in their organisation? How it impacts their organisation? How they can react next time they witness such a behaviour based on what they learnt in this session?”

    I will observe the member who will answer the “offensive” question. If the member answers the question with no doubt, I will not intervene. If the member feels the question offensive and refuses to answer it, I will intervene and ask the following questions to all members- “Which way do you think offensive? Why do you think the question is offensive? If give you one more chance, could you ask the same question in the different way? Try it.”

    I would intervene and point out that I observed a very offensive tone of voice. Then I would ask the group what the impact is individually, what the impact is for the process and let the team decide what tone of voice is acceptable.
    To continu the process I would ask the participant to rephrase the question.

    First of all “offensive” is subjective and the mere fact that the person said “no offense,” the person may in fact be stating what the person has in his mind with the intention of not offending someone else. I will not intervene initially at first, depending on the response of the person addressed. If the response is just a normal response as if answering the question and in a normal tone of voice, then I will not intervene. However, if there is a negative reaction of the person responding and that it leads to a different behavior such as a raising of the voice or remarks that do not address the question then I will intervene.

    The intervention will be the following:
    1) I have observed that the recent question was offensive thus provoking a similarly offensive remark or higher tone of voice.
    2) What do you think will be the impact of this behavior to this action learning session?
    3) How can we best proceed to be able to make the most of this action learning session or move the team forward?

    I would pause the session and ask, “Team, what has just happened here? Was there a statement of offense made? Yes, No or Quite Agree?”

    After the participants have agreed that there was an statement of offense made, I will than remind the participants that they should refrain from making any offensive statements as a mutual respect to the team and the problem presenter and ask, “Are we in agreement with this arrangement?” Yes or No?” After each participant has agreed, I’ll then proceed to ask the team to disregard the last statement made and restart the process “Who has the next question?”……….
