If this does not affect the discussion of the team, as a coach, the discussion should continue.

I would ask the member who answer the question:
– What is the question you have heard?
– For this specific question, what’s a better way to respond?”
Then I will turn to the team
-” What you have observed from this specific case?”
– “Why the person respond with open answer?”
-“What will you do next?”

1、If his question was a good one, and inspired the team to think, and drived the process, I will let the team to proceed without interference.
2、If the quality of the question was not high enough, and even confused the team, I will refer to the team remember by asking “ I heard you were describing your point with a long sentence. How much did you think you have get what you want to achieve?” I will refer to the team then “Did you get it?”
I will ask them then:” How to adjust then?”

If this affects the discussion or keeps happening, I would ask the respondent “What question are you answering?” or “What question was asked?” and then ask the questioner “Did you mean that question to be close-ended?”

I will wait and observe first, If this pattern occurred twice, I would intervene
“Is the question closed or opened?
“If you were asked by these kind of questions, how would you answer?

Which question are you answering? If they indicate X’s question?
What was X’s question?
Does what you were talking about answer X’s question?

As the action learning coach, I would ask the member what question s/he is answering and if the question was close-ended or open-ended. I would then ask the inquirer if s/he meant for the question to be close-ended and if not, if s/he would like to restate the question as open-ended.

If this question occurred at the beginning of the process, and if the answer was question-related, I as Action Learning Coach would not interfere with what group would continue to flow. However, if this happened again, I would interfere with the group to raise awareness of the qualities of the questions. I would ask something like: Was this an open or closed question? and then something like: What answers do we want when we ask a closed question?

As an Action learning Coach, I would intervene as follows:
Scenario 1: If the Team works fine, I still let the Team continue.
Scenario 2: I would ask the member with a closed question as follows:
– In your opinion, is this a closed or open question? How to turn closed questions into open questions?
