I would intervene by saying “What question are you answering?” then wait for the participant to respond, then intervene again by saying “What is your answer?”

I would intervene by asking the team if they noticed anything about the answer being provided. And follow up with how that makes them feel – to see if it helps them or distracts them. Then with what would help them in moving forward.

I would intervene asking the group if they can remind the rules of AL. When they mention the first rule, I would answer: “How we can we assure our statements are being made only in response to a question?” so they can reflex about the importance of answering only what is asked. Also can be marked the importance of being succinct in questions and answers.

I would ask the team, “It seemed the fellow provided some information which was not related to the original question? Do you have the same observation or feeling?” If it is confirmed by the team, I would ask again, “What would be the influence?” “What we can do better in the following discussion?”

    – Hello X, which question are you answering?
    – What is your answer?
    – If this continues in the group:
Hello team, how is our group answering the questions?
What will happen to the group if we continue?
What can we do to improve?

I would conduct a standard intervention by asking ” hi XXX, I notice that you provide some information, which question are you answering?” and then I would emphasize the AL principle of asking and answering questions.
If it continues in next phase, I would take a reflective intervention as ” Hi XXX, why do you think providing more information is important for the team ?” then ask PP one question that “How do you feel about this?”; Based on PP’s feedback, I will further get a commitment from this participant by asking ” how can we do better in next phase?”

In this situation I ask the group if they would like to reflect on what is happening. And link that to the basic rules of action learning. I ask the questioner whether he has answered the original question. If necessary, I will ask if more has been answered than is necessary. I only do this if the group cannot reach an agreement themselves.
