Scenario: Tools

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: You ask the team how they want to process based on how they said they could come to consensus. One of the participant shouts out an idea and jumps up to get it started before any other team members have had a chance to respond.

I would ask the team: How are we doing as team? OK or NOT OK? (require everyone respond)What goes well? what could be done better? What’s the impact of getting started without other team member’s response? What does the team what to do about it?

I would take a while first to see if the group will react to this behavoiur, if not – I would do the followith thing:
As the action comes definetely from one person, I would calmly turn to that person: “Let me stop you for a while. A moment ago you as a team decided to proceed in the way X. Now it seems that you came with your idea and even implementation of it. How could you change a bit what you have said in order to be OK with the way you decided to proceed?”

    I would ask the team:
Hello team, what is going on here? Have we got team consensus?
What is the impact of this on the team?
What should we do to make it better?

I would start stopping a bit that person:
” please hold on for a second. We have a first proposal from you. It’s great. I just want to make sure we didn’t rush with the first idea, before hearing other proposals. Team, are we happy with proposed solution or we should take more time to discuss alternatives?

I would use my intervention to check with the rest of the team if this is how they want to proceed and confirm if the team thinks we are in the solution mode already.

I would intervene and ask the team if they believe we have consensus on the process. If each person acknowledges there is consensus then congratulate them and the team can move on, if no consensus is reached at that point, ask each member of the team what they believe is needed from the group to reach consensus in order to move to the next item,
