Scenario: Windows

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: The team is working on a porch with windows around three sides. As the session starts two participants stand up at the same time. One walks to one side of the room and closes a window, the other walks to the other and opens a window.

As an action learning coach, I would make an intervention
I would name the situation: I have noticed that X closed the window, and Y opened the second window. How do you feel about this.
Next I would ask how we are doing as a team on a scale 1- 10?
    What are we doing well?
    What can we do better?

As an Action Learning Coach, I would do an intervention. In addition to the 2 main principles in AL, the group sets all standards. I would say something like this: “I see that one person just closed the window while the other opened it. What would you like to do as a group at the moment?”

facing this situation, as an action learning couch I would intervence by asking
    1. If the team member notice that there is one person closed the windons and the other person opened the other windows ?
    2. Then I will ask what the team member feel about it ?
    3. After that I will ask what is the impact to the effectiveness to team member ?
    4. How can we do better ?

I would say: ‘Did anyone else noticed someone closing a window and another one opening a window? How is this impacting us as a group?’ If everybody is okay with that, I would let the session continue. If the group has a problem with it I would ask ‘How do we want to handle this?’.

I would make an intervention: “I notice that one person closed one window while other opened another window.” “Did anyone notice that too?” “What’s the impact when decisions are taken without consulting the group?” “How would we guarantee this grupo’s consensus for decisions?”

This situation may be purely casual or may be a way -for the 2 participants involved- to distress or to show “who is in control”. I would simply underline that there is a misalignment related to the “perception of temperature” and take advantage of this event asking the team what would be in their opinion the impact of a decision taken without consensus. This moment of reflection may be useful along the entire session. I would then encourage the group to find a consensus on this issue and identify a solution on how to handle it in order for the team o feel comfortable.

As a coach, I would intervene on the involvement of each team member, because that is where the learning opportunity lies. I would say “I notice 2 people getting up to open or close the window, how does that help us in the process?” then I would ask the team if we can continue with everyone’s involvement.

As an ALC I will say:
“I noticed that windows are open and closed / or that the flow of air is modified. Did anyone else notice that?”
“What is the impact on the team when colleagues modified the environment without talking with the team?”
“What can we do better on team decision?”

As an AL coach, I would indicate that during the session the focus should be on the conversation with each other and the problem. Walking during a session takes the focus away. The persons concerned will be asked about the reasons for whether or not to open a window (it may be that someone is not feeling well). The group will then be asked whether or not a window should be opened. Finally, everyone will be asked if it is possible to start without interruptions.

It seems that the two people have similar but conflicting needs. As an Action Learning Coach, I would do an intervention and ask: as a member of this group, I notice what happened here and I would like to know how the group feels about it. Is someone feeling uncomfortable? How the group would like to proceed?
