Scenario:Out of Control
As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation:
The problem presented is outside the control or influence of the problem presenter and the team. For instance: A consultants presents about an organization he does not consult for – Organization A has a culture of fear.

I would respectfully ask the presenter to come up with a challenge / problem within their control or scope of influence. I would explain that the nature of action learning is essentially help ones own organization develop creative, flexible and successful strategies to pressing problems. It is not on the presenter or the team to find solutions to problems that do not directly effect them.

I would intervene and remind the Group that the problem must be feasible as Action Learning is effective when used to confront real problems that are within the control or influence of the Problem Presenter and team.
I would then tell the Problem Presenter:
• “Please take a few minutes to select another problem that the group can help you with.”

As a coach, I would ask the team:
-What is the problem team that arise and what is it controllable and what is not?
– What if we still spend time on things that we cannot control?
– What will the team do in order for the team to continue with this?
