Scenario: Repetitive Questions

As an action learning coach, how would you handle the following situation: The team members are starting to ask the same questions over and over again.

    As a action learning coach would i ask the team members why they keep asking the same questions. Then i will ask them if it is possible for them to approach the problem from another perspective and give them an example. In that way more angles will be looked upon.

    As a coach, i will intervene by asking: – “Team, I noticed that we are asking the same questions over and over again. What is happening?”

    After answers are heard, I will follow-on by asking: – “What is the impact on our progress?”

    After answers are heard, I will follow-on by asking: – “What could we do better?”

    I will start by asking “How are we doing as a team?” and have them rate the experience thru finger voting (1 lowest – 10 highest). Then I’ll share my observation “Team, I noticed that some questions are being asked over and over, what’s happening?”. After the team provided their answers, I’ll add “what’s the impact to our progress if we will ask the same questions as we resume?”. Once the members shared their insights, I’ll ask the team “What can we do differently so we don’t get to ask the same questions over and over?”.

    I’d make an intervention by asking: Team, how are we doing in 1-10 scale?What did we do well? What could we do in a different way?
    If the Team didn’t notice that have been asking the same questions, I’d say: I need to reflect that you have been asking the same questions over and over again. What did it impact? How did it influence identification of problem solution? What can we do to avoid asking the same questions? What can help you doing that?

    I would intervene with the team in order to raise awareness in the participants about some possible mistakes, such as:
    “How is the team’s work in asking questions as compared to before, is there any improvement?”
    “What is the participation of all the team members?”
    “What could be the impact on our progress if repetitive questions continue to be asked?”
    “What would the team like to do to improve for next time?”
    “If there is someone who does not use the LC skills, please pay attention and try again, to make most use of this practice.”

    In this situation, I usually use two interventions I start by asking, for example, What is the quality of our questions? – How does it affect the work on the problem? What can we do to keep the work moving forward?
    or ” In the last 10 minutes I hear ( the 3rd time) the same question, have you also noticed this? how does it affect our work? What do we need in this case?

    As an action learning coach, I would utilize the What – So what – Now what intervention model in this situation. I would engage the group by asking: “What is happening in the discussion? (What)”. Next, I would inquire: “How does the repetition of questions impact the effectiveness and quality of our discussion? (So what)”. Finally, I would ask: “What can we do differently to avoid redundant questions and enhance the discussion? (Now what)”.Then I will lean back and let the group come up with a solution for this scenario. This way will assist the group in understanding their behavior, comprehending its impact, and suggesting concrete steps to improve the discussion process and foster positive interaction within the team.
