Scenario: Testing team

As an Action Learning Coach how would you handle the following situation: The problem presenter decides to test the team but giving mis-information to the team. By the time this becomes apparent, many of the team members are upset to varying degrees.

    Wow – no answers………
Hopefully this one would be caught before it was even brought to the team.

a potential sequence of questions –
How are we doing being complete open with our responses?
Why is it important that response are always open and accurate?
How do we want to hold ourselves and each other to being completely open and honest with responses?

    Happy Coaching

Team, what is the emotional level on a scale of 1-10?
Team, what would be the impact on our session if this were to go on?
Team, how important is it to exercise transparency during our session?
Team, what could we do to improve this situation?

I would ask the team a series of questions: How should the team go about validating information provided by the sponsor? If the information is found incorrect or incomplete, what is the best way to communicate this feedback to the sponsor?

I would intervene and say “I noticed that some members are upset. What is happening?” If someone pointed out the “giving of mis-information” issue, I would ask “how can we respond to this issue?”, followed by “how can we prevent this from happening again?” If no one pointed out the issue (or too hesitated to point out the issue), I would ask “what will happen to the team if we continue?”, followed by “how should we like to proceed?”

Here we have a learning opportunity, with “SID”, I would ask several questions :
1\Team, what happened just now in our meeting.
someone may tell, him or she is not feeling good since the PP ‘s question is not well understood….
2\Team, waht is the impact if we continue the meeting like this?
2\Team, xx said the PP’s question is not well understood, do you agree ? yes or no?
    after confirm one by one
3\ what can we do to make a common understanding better?
    4\who has the next question?

    I would ask the team:
    1) Rate on a scale of 1 to 10, the level of trust in the information being presented?
    2) How might the group improve its functioning and quality of information garnered to facilitate problem solving?
    3) What actions would the group like to take to help the group to move forward?
    4) What lessons can be learned from this?

If it is possible, and I have the opportunity as the Action Learning Coach to liaise with the problem presenter before the session, I would ensure that there is clarify on the problem, and this would minimise this scenario from becoming a reality
